NJDOT Alexander Road over Amtrak

The bridge carrying Alexander Road over the four rails of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor is the main east-west thoroughfare to the Princeton Junction Train Station, one of the business commuter rail stations in New Jersey. NJDOT retained the services of IEW Construction Group to replace the functionally obsolete substandard existing bridge with a modern structure. The construction of the new bridge was very closely coordinated between Amtrak and IEW. In order to avoid disruption to Amtrak and NJ Transit operations, the work was staged in a way that work over the railroad took place only between the hours of midnight to 4 am. The project also included the construction of a new “rotary” to facilitate traffic movements around the train station.
